Seahorses are tiny fish that are named for the shape of their head, which looks like the head of a tiny horse. There are at least 25 species of seahorses. Seahorses live in warm tropical waters all over the world. They prefer areas where they can find cover from predators. Coral reefs, seagrass beds, and places where rivers meet the sea are suitable for these defenseless creatures.
They are slow swimmers and therefore they are easy targets for predators. They often hang on to sea grasses with their tail to stay hidden. They swim upright among seaweed and other plants. Seahorses use their dorsal fins to propel slowly forward. To move up and down, seahorses adjust the volume of air in their swim bladders, which is an air pocket inside their bodies.
A female seahorse lays dozen, sometimes hundreds, of eggs in a pouch on the male seahorse’s abdomen. It is called as brood pouch as it resembles a kangaroo’s pouch. The babies hatch after 45 days in the brood pouch. They find other baby seahorses and float together in small groups, clinging to each other using their tails. Unlike kangaroos, baby seahorses do not return to the pouch. They must find food and hide from predators as soon as they are born.
